University Grants Commission (UGC) Debars OPJS University from Awarding PhD Degrees

New Delhi: In a recent development, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has taken strict action against OPJS University (Private University), located in Rawatsar Kunjla, Near Sankhu Fort, Rajgarh (Sadulpur), Jhunjunu Road, Churu, Rajasthan -331303, for not adhering to the regulations set forth by the commission in awarding PhD degrees.

According to an official notification released by the UGC, OPJS University has been found to be non-compliant with the prescribed procedures for awarding PhD degrees, prompting the UGC to debar the university from enrolling scholars under its PhD program with immediate effect. The UGC has also explicitly cautioned prospective students and parents against seeking admission in the PhD program offered by OPJS University, emphasizing that degrees awarded by the university without UGC approval will not be recognized for higher education and employment purposes.

The decision to debar OPJS University stems from the university’s failure to provide essential information and its non-participation in UGC meetings. The UGC had previously directed 14 universities, including OPJS University, to submit data on PhD degrees awarded in 2018. Despite repeated requests and a show-cause notice, OPJS University did not comply with the prescribed format for data submission nor attended the UGC meeting. The UGC views this non-compliance seriously, leading to the immediate suspension of the university’s authority to confer PhD degrees.

The UGC’s notification states, “In the absence of UGC approval, PhD awarded by the university shall not be treated recognized/valid for the purpose of higher education and employment.” The UGC has also highlighted its commitment to implementing measures to prevent such violations in the future.

Prospective students and parents are strongly advised to refrain from enrolling in the PhD program offered by OPJS University until the UGC provides clearance for the university to resume offering such programs. The UGC’s move underscores the importance of adherence to established regulations in maintaining the credibility and recognition of academic degrees.
